Focus On: Mobile App Design Trends for 2012

Mobile applications are on the rise as more consumers switch over to smartphones. Between Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating system there are plenty of wonderful apps to browse through. The past year has built up a catalog of exceptional design patterns which will continue over into 2012.

In this article I’d like to spend a bit of time examining some of the more popular trends. Graphics designers are jumping on board quickly and appear willing to share their knowledge. And generally it is the users who are responding to the many varying interfaces. Mobile trends have branched off into countless ideas and it’s fascinating to watch the process unfold.

You literally insert your iPhone/iPod into a traditional pad with this accessory.

ION's iCade Mobile, a new bluetooth accessory, provides a d-pad and buttons to your iPhone and iPod Touch. Also, there's a new revision for the original iCade for the iPad.

ION has revealed a new peripheral for the iOS devices. The original iCade allowed iPad users to turn their device into an arcade cabinet, adding a joystick and eight buttons.

Now at CES, the company is applying the concept to the iPhone and iPod Touch with iCade Mobile, a new add-on that allows players to play their favorite iOS games with a full d-pad and action buttons.

Same as the original, the new version will connect to your iPhone or iPod using Bluetooth. The device adds four lateral buttons, four central buttons and a d-pad.

ION also introduced the iCade Core, a new design variation for the original iCade, which ditches the wooden cabinet in favor of a simple controller/dock solution for iPad users.

Seems the iCade Mobile will retail for $79.95. A bit high, but the concept surely looks interesting.

Microsoft Bringing Its CRM App to iPhone, iPad and Android

Microsoft said on Monday that it is bringing its customer relationship management software to Android and iOS as part of the next release of the mobile Dynamics CRM.

The new release will support the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, as well as BlackBerry and Microsoft’s own Windows Phone operating system.

“In today’s hyperconnected world, customers need to be able to access their business-critical data on the device of their choice from wherever they are,” Dynamics CRM General Manager Dennis Michalis said in a statement.

The release continues a Microsoft trend of developing mobile apps for the competition’s platforms. In December alone, Redmond added iOS support for Kinectimals, SkyDrive and Lync, along with an iPad version of OneNote.

Of course, the big question is whether Microsoft will bring full-blown Office to iOS.

T-Mobile USA blames iPhone 4S for huge customer defections in holiday quarter, says 4G LTE coming in 2013

The nation’s fourth-largest wireless carrier T-Mobile USA just reported it lost 802,000 contract
customers during the holiday quarter, causing revenues to dip 3.3-percent to $20.6 billion. For comparison, the company reported 186,000 net contract customer losses in the third quarter of 2011 and 251,000 in the year-ago quarter. The Deutsche Telekom-owned carrier put the blame for such a huge decline in customers and mindshare on Apple’s iPhone 4S that bypassed T-Mobile to launch last October on AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and regional carriers C Spire Wireless and Claro Puerto Rico, the largest Puerto Rican telecommunications services company.

A statement from Deutsche Telekom said:

For T-Mobile USA, the past year was characterized by significant challenges, particularly in the fourth quarter, following the market launch of the new Apple iPhone model by the three major national competitors in October. [...] However, not carrying the iPhone led to a significant increase in contract deactivations in the fourth quarter of 2011. [...] Sequentially, the decline in branded net contract customers was driven primarily by higher branded contract deactivations as a result of the launch of the iPhone 4S by three nationwide competitors in mid-October.

The Bellevue, Wash.-headquartered firm contemplated for far too long whether to invest big bucks into 4G LTE deployment, and it clung to a hopeful merger with AT&T to solve its capital investment issues. With that deal off the table now, the company is promising to launch 4G LTE service sometime next year, tapping $1.4 billion of its own investment, re-farmed frequencies, and extra spectrum acquired from AT&T.

The carrier offers more than a million iPhone users on its network some support that includes Micro-SIM cards for iPhone 4. Interestingly, unlocked iPhone 4S devices work in some T-Mobile USA’s network pockets, because the phone uses the carrier’s HSPA+ 1900MHz spectrum. As AT&T’s planned merger with T-Mobile USA fell apart, there was some talk about the latter theoretically using resources and spectrum gained from the failed merger to become iPhone-compatible.

China Mobile iPhone 4S users complain of glitches

Chaos erupted when Apple stores launched sales of the iPhone 4Sin China in early January, with scuffles breaking out among eager customers and scalpers. More troubles cropped up during and after the long Chinese New Year holidays.
There have been severe shortages of the latest Apple smartphones at Apple stores or designated outlets in China. Some authorized stores have reportedly jacked up the price tag.
After offices and businesses reopened at the end of the holidays, telecom service giant China Unicom, Apple's first authorized telecom partner in China, announced a plan to sell a "bare" iPhone 4S through its own marketing channel. Rival state-run carrier China Telecom said it will soon start offering a CDMA version of iPhone 4S. But China Mobile, which has the largest number of mobile phone users in the world, is still left in the cold. After a long wait, the company's customers are still unable to get an iPhone compatible with the TD-LTE system used by China Mobile.
There have also been widespread complaints from many customers who have been able to get hold of an iPhone 4S when the users found that they could not activate the smartphone with China Mobile SIM cards.
Others complained about not being able to place calls with the SIM cards, although the telecom signal seemed normal, according to a report from the National Business Daily.
The situation also highlights the strong position held by Apple and the awkward situation faced by telecom companies, although China has become the world's largest mobile phone market and Apple's No. 2 market in the world.
Users and telecom experts interviewed by the daily have preliminarily drawn an initial conclusion that the frequency band of China Mobile could have been negligently eliminated or covered up by Apple.
One technician at a telecom company said there is a specific design in iPhone 4S that invalidates CDMA support when the handset is brought to the Chinese market.
Frequency bands have been used by telecom service companies to protect their own market shares while limiting inroads by competitors, said the technician.
Some have pointed out that the frequency of CDMA 870-880MHz invalidated by the design of the iPhone 4S is just 5MHz different from China Mobile's EGSM network frequency. China Mobile's frequency band could have been erroneously or accidentally eliminated when he CDMA frequency was covered.
When questioned by reporters from the newspaper, an Apple executive in China declined to answer such charges but stressed that the functions and signal reception of iPhone 4S are already much better than those of the earlier generation, the iPhone 4.
China Mobile is now also selling iPhone and SIM cards for the iPhone 4S mainly because of the popularity of the products, although customers' handsets are still unable to support the company's TD network. Fu Liang, a telecom specialist, noted that China Mobile's 3G business has long been fighting an uphill battle because of the incomplete TD-SCDMA industry chain in China. Many large enterprises have hinted they will lend bigger support to the sector, but few have taken concrete action.
In spite of the adversities, China Mobile should work even harder to develop its 3G and 4G business operations so that it may quickly seize time and opportunities to roll out new star products and services, he suggested.

iCade Mobile adds physical gaming controls to your iPhone

LAS VEGAS--Tired of playing games with virtual buttons on your iPhone? Well, a few companies, including Ion Audio, are making Bluetooth game controllers that work with the iPhone and Android smartphones.

We got a chance to play around with the Ion iCade Mobile ($79.99) and found that it worked well enough (yes, those are shoulder buttons on top). That said, Steve Jobs would probably cringe at its design. The shiny black plastic is a fingerprint magnet and the whole contraption isn't terribly elegant. True, we were using an early version of the device, so we may see some refinements before launch in May.

When it does ship this spring, iCade Mobile is supposed to work with around 100 games (no, not all games will be compatible with it--far from it). It's worth noting that the controller does allow you to turn your device vertically or horizontally, which is good.

At its booth here, Ion was also showing off the iCade Core ($99.99), a less fancy version of its iCade gaming cabinet for the iPad, and had a mock-up on hand of the iCade Jr. ($69.99), a shrunken-down version of the iCade that works with the iPhone.
